Colorado has made sweeping changes in its drug possession laws - including Schedule I and II substances- corresponding offense levels, convictions, fines, and sentencing guidelines. Colorado has recently enacted these sweeping reforms, and many other states are looking to this as a model for their reform. Additionally, there are grant programs that may provide counties with substance abuse or mental health treatment services, including diversion.

He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science at Colorado State University, in 2002, and then attended the University of Denver law school.
