Minutes of RMPA Pro-Bono Committee
July 17, 2007, Office of Holme Roberts & Owen LLP
The second meeting of the RMPA Pro-Bono Committee was held at the office of Holme Roberts & Owen LLP on Tuesday, July 17th. In attendance were Nancy Evans, Nora Ablutz, Debra Kendrick, Mary Peoples, Merle Levy, Azenda Ahmad, Michael Miller and Janice Lancaster.
The Committee discussed various projects and will concentrate on gathering additional information on the following:
Jim Bye Day. United Way is organizing an event on August 25, 2007 to honor James E. Bye, Esq., a long time supporter of charitable organizations in Denver. Participants will be able to assist various organizations in Denver from noon to 4pm on August 25th.
Rocky Mountain Children's Law Center. Debra Kendrick will gather additional information regarding paralegal assistance needed at Urban Peak, a shelter for teens, and the opportunity for paralegals to report for children in the court system.
Project Homeless Connect. This is a bi-annual event that connects Denver’s homeless with much needed services and information that will assist them in living life off the streets. The next event will be held at Invesco Field on Friday, October 19, 2007.
Denver Street Outreach Collaboration. Funded by Denver Human Services, the Denver Street Outreach Collaboration involves over 20 outreach professionals and agencies to assist in the goal to end homelessness in Denver.
Wills on Wheels. RMPA member, Beth Wilkins, detailed in a written memo to the Committee ways in which members may assist with providing wills, living wills, medical powers of attorney, and other basic documents for the elderly. Beth organizes presentations which members are invited to attend. Members would be able to assist with initial phone interviews, drafting of estate planning documents, notarization of documents and witnessing of wills. Knowledge of estate planning would be valuable but it is not necessary. Interested members may contact Beth Wilkins at bknarnia@aol.com.
The Committee sees itself as an ongoing source of information regarding pro-bono and community service projects open to RMPA member participation. The Committee will work to provide information regarding the above-described opportunities and will publish the information in the Overview and on the RMPA website. The Committee will organize members who wish to participate in the Jim Bye Day and in the Project Homeless Connect. Anyone interested in either of these scheduled projects should contact Janice Lancaster at janice.lancaster@hro.com. The Committee is open it any suggestions or comments regarding its focus. |
